What activities can volunteers do?
Whilst aircraft maintenance and guiding are large parts of what we do, there are other activities that volunteers can get involved in.
Display Research and Curation
The displays we have in our museum are all created by volunteers – from the text on the walls to the model planes in the cases and other artefacts created for them. Volunteers research display topics, find or build artefacts for displays and design display presentations.
Promotional Activities
When we visit shows, our volunteers come with us to represent the museum and engage with the public.
Our Instagram account is also maintained by volunteers, with them also writing the content and finding the images to post.
Site Maintenance
A lot of our site maintenance is completed by volunteers. This includes cutting the grass, emptying bins and more substantial projects such as installing new fencing to keep the museum presentable and safe for all guests to enjoy.
Aircraft Maintenance
The aircraft don’t look after themselves, they require countless hours of work to keep looking as good as possible, and safe for guests to enjoy. Maintenance tasks range from hoovering the interiors of the aircraft the public can access, to pressure washing aircraft, stripping them down for restoration and repainting them.
Recently, we have also been adding new electronics to displays, such as audio tracks and light-up components (such as the radar display in the Vulcan cockpit). These projects are completed by our passionate volunteers.
Guiding
The more volunteer guides we have available, the more aircraft can be opened. Our guides are friendly, knowledgeable and form a key part of the museum experience for our customers. If you have a love for aircraft and want to share this, guiding could be the role for you.
